Carbon storage stacks up
Some of the UK’s largest industrial operators are joining the push to bring carbon capture and storage technology forward.
Media reports suggest that major industrial businesses such as Cadent, BP, Shell, Tata Steel, National Grid and Drax have joined an industry led group to advise the government on key areas such as costs, risk issues and market support that could see the first UK carbon capture and storage facility developed by the mid 2020's.
The news builds on the government’s announcement at Decemeber’s COP 24 talks of £170m funding to help develop the World’s ‘net-zero carbon’ cluster of heavy industry by 2040.
Energy expert view
“Good news to see serious interest in developing carbon capture, utilisation and storage from major industry and energy sector businesses around the UK.
"With the support from government and input from researchers/developers this should help deliver much needed technology that can help us make progress in the challenge of controlling and reducing our climate change emissions.” Alastair Fells MEI, Incorporated Eng, PG Dip Fuel Tech, BSc Hons
