Electricity storage projects progress

Three innovative electricity storage projects being developed in the UK are indicative of the technologies that could help deliver reliable low carbon electricity in the future.

Dublin based Schwungrad Energie and Sheffield Hallam University are developing a flywheel battery hybrid storage scheme – a €4m Euro project. Eventually the scheme is expected to be capable of producing 1MW of peak power and 20kWh of energy storage.

Dong Energy is installing a 2MW battery storage system at its Burbo Banks 90MW offshore wind project. As well as storing surplus energy, the facility will be used to help balance the frequency of the power grid. Engineering company ABB is providing the technology, which is to be installed by the end of the year.

Nissan and Northern Powergrid, the district network operator for the North East’s electricity distribution grid, have agreed to work together on projects investigating how electric vehicles, batteries and new technologies can help support electricity networks.
