HMRC trials new online service to register for charity tax status
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has launched a trial of its new digital service which enables charities to apply for charity tax status online. This is likely to benefit newer charities once they have been established and intend to claim Gift Aid or charity tax reliefs.
This new service follows the launch in 2013 of an online service to claim charity tax relief, for which a charity must already be registered with HMRC. Until now charities have had to submit a form ChA1 and supporting documentation in hardcopy form.
It is intended that HMRC and the Charity Commission will offer a joint registration portal in or around 2015.
