IHC’s game changing new trencher

A leading subsea engineering business is anticipating winning new business and creating North East jobs following the successful testing and development of the world’s first remote operated subsea trencher.

Royal IHC, which has sites at Stocksfield, Byth, Wallsend and Newcastle, has designed its new ‘Hi-Traq’ trencher specifically for offshore wind farms. The new technology has the potential to reduce cable laying time by around 50% over current methods and save millions of pounds in project development costs. The technology was developed and tested during 2017 at ORE Catapults facility at Blyth in Northumberland.

Ralph Manchester, technical manager at Royal IHC, said: “This is the first machine of its type and we are now very close to commercialisation. We now hope to scale up, creating jobs both here in Northumberland and in the UK supply chain.”
