New electric vehicle batteries to save homeowners £500 a year

Sunderland based car manufacturer Nissan has linked up with American power systems firm Eaton to make ‘second use’ electric vehicle batteries available to the residential market as electricity storage. The system, branded xStorage, should provide savings on electricity of around £500 year at a cost of around £3,500. The partnership expect to sell 100,000 units over the next five years.

The venture is the first for the partnership that will provide energy storage solutions for both the residential and commercial sectors. In light of these plans Nissan recently invested £26m in battery production at Sunderland for ‘next generation’ batteries.
