Port of Blyth opens £2m renewable energy training centre
The Port of Blyth has teamed up with Northumberland College and the University of Newcastle to open a £2m renewable energy training centre. The state of the art facility offers one of the few renewable energy training courses available in the UK.
Newcastle University’s Emerson Cavitation Tunnel Laboratory will provide a world class environment to study propulsion, water turbine, coating technology, ice research and a number of other niche areas. Northumberland College’s wind turbine technician training facility, also on site, is to be backed by certification body BZEE.
The current site, which forms part of phase one of the Blyth Education and Community Hub (BEACH) development, opened in 2014. It includes a maritime heritage centre, an engineering and marine science base for Newcastle University, space for the training and community outreach charity Blyth Tall Ship and the Blyth Boathouse restaurant.
