Push for government support for onshore wind
A group of major businesses and organisations in the onshore wind sector in the UK has reportedly, written to the UK’s new Energy Minister, Kwasi Kwarteng, asking for government support for development of new onshore wind power, in order to help meet its goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions target cost effectively.
Suggestions in the letter are said to include opening up the Contracts for Difference auction process to onshore wind as well as looking at planning rules to allow the most efficient turbines to be used in suitable high wind locations.
Signatories are reported to include organisations such as; ScottishPower Renewables, EDF Renewables, innogy, SSE Renewables, Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, Vestas, RES Group, Vattenfall, Statkraft and CS Wind, as well as trade associations RenewableUK and Scottish Renewables. Other organisations (outside of the letters signatories) are also said to be supportive of a new approach to onshore wind, including unions and organisations involved in environmental campaigning, nature conservation and trade groups.
