River Tyne energy development programme to cut costs

Gateshead Council continue with their leading energy development programme, investing £2.5m into a 3MW battery electricity storage scheme that is about to go into operation. The scheme will mean that electricity will be supplied to some key buildings on the River Tyne, notably the Sage Gateshead and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.

The system will operate from 4pm, with electricity having been generated from Gateshead council’s energy centre earlier (and more cheaply) in that day. The electricity will then be distributed through a ‘private wires’ network that will connect the buildings following an £18m investment by the Council. Customers are expected to save around 5% on electricity bills and 10% on heat. Further schemes are being considered at the Metro Centre and Team Valley.
