UK Renewables generation outstrips nuclear for the first time

DECC’s latest energy data for the three month period August to October 2014, highlights some interesting developments in the ever changing UK energy mix.

Electricity generation from coal fell below gas mainly due to plant closures; gas produced 36.6% of power from the major producers over the period, coal produced 28.7% and nuclear produced 19.1%. Wind generation from major producers was up by 5.9% from increased capacity and overall renewables were up 24%, mainly due to increased biomass generation.

A key milestone was also reached in the period with renewable generation exceeding nuclear for the first time. However, the fall in nuclear generation also contributed to the overall low carbon electricity share from major producers falling 1.2% to 34.7%.
