UK to develop world’s first anti-carbon power station

Three energy organisations have agreed to work together to look into developing carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) and hydrogen production for the Humber area by the mid 2020’s.

Energy production business Drax Group, National Grid Ventures and oil and gas business Equinor, have come together to devise the development, which could see the UK’s first zero carbon cluster.

The group will explore developing the pilot-scale bioenergy carbon capture and storage system installed at Drax Power Station, in North Yorkshire, potentially creating the world’s first ‘carbon negative’ power station by the mid 2020’s.

The scaled-up technology could potentially serve as the focus for a regional CCUS hub, including capturing emissions from industry in the nearby area. The group also want to explore large-scale hydrogen production at the Drax Power Station site, together with the development of a regional hydrogen economy.
