Worlds largest wind farm to generate ‘green’ hydrogen

A renewables project, led by a consortium of energy companies, has won £7.5m government funding for a new hydrogen power development for industrial use.

The Gigastack project is being led offshore wind developer Ørsted, who are developing Hornsea Project Two, set to be the world’s largest wind farm, alongside ITM Power, oil and gas company Phillips 66 and consultancy Element Energy.

How it works

The £7.5m funds are to develop a front end engineering design feasibility study looking into connecting a 100MW modular electrolysis unit to the Hornsea Project Two wind farm development, with the hydrogen being supplied to industrial off-taker Phillips 66 Limited’s Humber refinery.

As part of the project ITM Power aim to validate an electrolyser production system able to produce hundreds of mega watts of capacity per year. Another aim is to identify and highlight regulatory, commercial and technical challenges for real applications of industrial-scale renewable hydrogen systems.
