Muckle maintains “excellent” commitment to health and wellbeing
For the second year in a row, we are delighted to have been recognised for our healthy work environment by being awarded the “Maintaining Excellence” award from Better Health at Work.
The awards, which are endorsed by Public Health England, seek to recognise employers’ efforts in combatting workplace health and wellbeing issues across the North East and Cumbria.
Since starting our BHAW journey in 2016 and achieving Bronze in 2017, we have seen our rankings climb to the second-highest accolade of “Maintaining Excellence”, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to providing a healthy workplace for all.
Top-down approach
Our people are our greatest asset, which is why their health and wellbeing continues to be an integral part of our culture and is supported from the top down.
We support our people across five areas of wellbeing – Physical, Mental, Social, Financial and Professional – and tailor activities around these areas all year round. Our activities are also a mixture of new and old to ensure maximum engagement from our people.
Tried-and-tested campaigns include coordinating healthy breakfasts and fitness classes to coincide with Healthy Living Week, a refresher of our Menopause Café, and the inaugural Muckle Metro Monopoly, where everyone gets the afternoon off to leave the office to take part in a friendly (or fierce, depending who you ask!) competition.
New initiatives include the introduction of Muckle Sports Day and a new step challenge via the YuLife app, as well as the launch of our Positivity Corner, a small library in our head office where our people are encouraged to take time out to read one of the books on offer.
The independent assessor from Better Health at Work was particularly pleased with the positivity corners, heralding it as “a great example of providing a wellbeing environment for staff and this was great to see.”
ED&I at the forefront
We were also recognised for our commitment to ED&I. The BHAW assessor noted that our series of talks with autism and neuro-divergent charity Daisy Chain, as well as the introduction of our volunteer parental leave mentors to support new parents, were particularly effective in further embedding ED&I across the business.
The assessor said: “Muckle has a very strong ED&I policy. This supports the whole ethos of the organisation and ensured that there was an offer year long which was great to see. Using external partners (That Spark) and developing the volunteer parental leave mentor’s programme provides support for what can be a difficult transitional phase.
“We were also pleased to see areas develop around neurodiversity / autism”.
Championing ESG
We take our Environmental, Social and governance (ESG) framework very seriously, and were pleased to see this recognised by the assessor, who commented that it “provides great social value through volunteering and give back opportunities.” Our support of the New Start programme was highlighted as “excellent”.
